Police and rescue workers recovered eight bodies from the river Shitalakkhya till yesterday evening after an engine boat capsized in the river Sunday night.
Seven of the deceased were identified as Shyamol, 25, of Baroipara; Noor Hossain, 45, of south Kalagachhia; Mahbubur Rahman, 26, of Sonakanda; Selim, 24, of Salehnagar; Jewel, 18, of Hazipur; Mukul Das, 25, of Hrishipara; Rubel, 19, of Rally Bagan area of the city.
The Identity of another deceased, a 21-year-old woman, could not be known immediately.
Of the deceased, Noor Hossain was the father of four children and also owner of a Hosiery factory, while the others were the workers of different Hosiery factories at Nayamati and Ukilpara areas of the city.
Police and locals said BIWTA officials started their rescue operation with the help of two tugboats in the early hours yesterday.
The sunken boat, however, could not be salvaged till filing of this report.
Executive magistrate of Narayanganj District Administration Shamsuddoza confirmed this saying eight bodies were recovered so far and all of them were floating in the river.
The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), local administration, Fire Service and Civil Defense were jointly carrying out the rescue operation.
